Fighting should be last resort, always. I think if the kids are young enough, there should be a parent, teacher or school official involved in a sit down. If their is no parent or teacher, or the kids are are more adult like, they definitely need to talk it out. if someone should throw the first blow, then you know you need to defend yourself.

I would simply tell my son to stand up for himself or to defend himself if he has to, but never bully.

I was never allowed to start a fight but I would get in more trouble from my old man if I got beat up and didnt put up a fight
