A former St. Charles East High School student is suing District 303 and several of its employees, alleging she was verbally and physically bullied, harrassed and hazed by fellow drill team members after being diagnosed with ADHD in summer 2010.

The suit, filed in Kane County last week, claims that district staff "knew or should have known" about the alleged bullying acts and did nothing to stop them from happening.

District staff subsequently retaliated against the student, who graduated last year and is now 19, by prohibiting her from participating in drill team performances and events and excluding her from team emails and other communications, according to the suit.

The suit, which seeks damages in excess of $50,000, describes a slew of bullying, hazing and harassment incidents occuring between the plaintiff's ADHD diagnosis in July 2010 through the 2012-13 school year. As a result of these acts, the plaintiff "sustained serious injuries and suffered severe emotional distress." She also required outpatient hospitalization and psychiatric treatment, the suit states.

Superintendent Don Schlomann declined to comment on details of the lawsuit.

At the beginning of the 2010-11 school year, the plaintiff's teammates forced her to participate in an initiation ritual in which she "was 'kidnapped' by more senior members of the team, forced to wear an embarrassing costume, and made to do humiliating acts in front of others, including members of the football team," the complaint states.

"Photos of this initiation were also posted to social media sites, such as Facebook."

Later that year, the plaintiff missed "a non-mandatory team building activity" and was suspended from a team event as a result, despite the absence being excused by a school principal.

"During this time, (the principal), instead of intervening and putting an end to the bullying and hazing rituals, told the Plaintiff to 'ignore' her teammates and that 'girls will be girls,'" the complaint states.

At one point in January 2011, another teammate "slapped Plaintiff in the face," during a team practice, according to the complaint. For reporting the incident, the plaintiff was not allowed to participate in the drill team State Competition that March, according to the complaint.

The plaintiff's attorney could not be reached for comment Thursday.

The lawsuit seeks a jury trial and is scheduled for case management on July 10 at 9 a.m. in Geneva.,0,4629702.story
