A family distraught over the death of their 17-year-old son is asking for answers. They say their son took his own life after years of off and on bullying at a school in Pitt County.

The Pitt County Sheriff's Office is stepping in to investigate, something it has never done before.

Wednesday afternoon, Jeffrey Hulon, Sr. and his wife, Angela, sat around their kitchen table, picking out a casket for their son, Jeffrey.

"It's the hardest thing you'll ever go through. Everything else will be easy to go through in life. I never wish that for anybody," said the father.

On Monday night their only son committed suicide, leaving a note to his family that he was tired of the bullying. Hulon said they had no idea Jeffrey was beat up in the school bathroom that day.

"In the note, he told his momma 'I'm sorry but don't cry.' He in his mind he'll go and still watch over you."

Hulon says his son was a quiet child, who kept to himself. He loved sports and played football at North Pitt High School in the 9th grade.

He says that's when the bullying began. They moved him to South Central High School for a while, where his grades improved and he started to thrive.

But Hulon says financial issues caused them to move again, back into the North Pitt school area in December for his tenth grade year.

The father says whatever happened to his son, happened inside the walls of the high school, and that in the suicide note he left names of the people who bullied him, which is why the sheriff's office is now investigating.

"In this specific incident there have been some allegations made that bullying may have precipitated this to happening," said Major Paula Dance.

The Pitt County Sheriff's Office says this investigation is the first of its kind for them and the reason they wanted to look into it further.

For now Hulon prepares to bury his son with no real answers into why and if the school district did enough to punish those who allegedly pushed their son, over the edge.

Pitt County Schools released a statement about Jeffery Hulon's death.

"Our hearts are heavy in the Pitt County School System as we look for answers regarding the death of a student at North Pitt High School. In accordance with state and federal law, we are limited in what we can say regarding specific students, however, protecting the safety and well being of all students is the top priority for all of our schools. When a student is faced with adversity, it is our hope that they will share that information with our administrators, teachers, or support staff so we can take steps to address the situation. This is a tragic event, and we will continue to cooperate with investigators and offer support to the family, students, and staff who are affected by this loss."

The family says they did talk with school administrators about Jeffrey Hulon being bullied, but since the district can not comment about it, WITN cannot confirm if anything was done or not.
