Laura Kathryn Wright is an English soprano. She is a classical-popular crossover singer who performs classical and operatic music, popular songs, musical theatre and folk songs.
Soprano Laura Wright has accused the Royal College of Music of not supporting her career, and claimed she was bullied by fellow students who were jealous of her success as a crossover artist.
Wright, who won BBC Radio 2 Chorister of the Year at 15 and topped the classical charts with debut album The Last Rose, graduated with a first-class degree from the institution last summer .
But she said: “I found it quite hard at Royal College, I have to say. I found quite a lot of?... probably bitterness is the right word.
“My four years there definitely gave me a harder skin. There was always quite an interest in what I was doing, but not always in a positive or supportive way. I heard people talking behind my back. The main gist was I was dumbing down classical music ... It came across as a little bit jealous.”
Wright, a former member of the All Angels classical quartet, said she felt she had little support from the college: “Every day of the last two years of my course I considered quitting. I’d have low points thinking, ‘Why am I doing this? I’m not happy’. There was a lack of support from the conservatoire.
“I can deal with bullies, but it was a shame there wasn’t much support for what I was doing. I wanted to represent [the college] and be proud to do so. But I got a first and was very proud of that.”
