Bristol beauty queen Amy Willerton says she tries to never judge someone on their appearance - because she herself was once bullied for the way she looked.
Speaking to the Bristol Post when she was competing in Miss England, she explained that she was a schoolgirl ugly duckling who turned into a swan (complete with modelling jobs, and the Miss Bristol crown).
The former Cotham School and Redland Green School student said in 2010: “When I was younger I was really shy with braces and glasses, and I got bullied at school.
“Then I had the braces taken off and stopped wearing glasses, and people started treating me very differently. I even had some people asking me if I’d just joined the school, even though I’d been there for four years!
“After I left, the school contacted me and asked if I would do some mentoring, and now I try to give confidence to other girls at school who might be in a similar situation.
“It’s something I really enjoy doing, and in a way being Miss Bristol is a way of helping people as I’m curvier than a lot of models, and proof that you don’t have to be a size zero to go on the catwalk.”
