Nina Davuluri is Miss New York 2013 and Miss America 2014. She is the first Indian American to be chosen as Miss America and as Miss New York. She is also the first to perform a Bollywood dance on the Miss America stage. After she was crowned Miss America, there was a backlash of xenophobic and racist comments in social media.

Nina Davuluri made history on September 15 when she became the first American of Indian origin to be crowned Miss America. Her victory, however, was marred by racist slurs as social networking sites were abuzz with comments about her not being 'American' enough to hold the title. "It was atrocious. People called her Ms. 7-11 and Ms. Al-Queda, solely based on her Indian ancestry. As a nation, we have to become more inclusive than that," Ironically, the girl was born in Syracuse and has lived in the US all her life, as her parents emigrated from India 30 years ago!
