Like many Americans, Rima Fakih, who made history in 2010 when she became the first Muslim and first Arab-American to win the Miss USA title, is thinking about where she was on Sept. 11, 2001, as the 10-year anniversary of the attack nears.
The Dearborn resident -- who lived in New York at the time -- talked to MTV News about that day, sharing that she could see the smoke from the World Trade Center from the window of her Queens high school.
Everyone in her family was safe, but Fakih faced bullying in her Catholic school after the attacks, and her family's Middle Eastern restaurant was vandalized.
Ten years later, the beauty queen is optimistic: "I think our generation has grown. My generation, especially, has seen so much fear and then so much change and growth ... that it planted this fearlessness inside us and this ability to feel like we live in a country where you can do anything and we can overcome."
