Lauren Spierer was a student at Indiana University. She disappeared on June 3rd, 2011 after a night out with people she thought were her friends. She was 20 years old.

The night she disappeared, she was captured on camera leaving her apartment, smiling as she headed out to meet friends. A short time later, she was seen at a bar, where a male acquaintance was buying her drinks and encouraging her to drink shots. Soon after, she was reported to be severely intoxicated. Whether this was due to alcohol or the effects of a date rape drug aren't known, but she was seen stumbling and falling, unable to walk on her own. In this state, she left the bar with the acquaintance, leaving behind her shoes, cellphone and purse. Along the way, a group of friends and a stranger witnessed the acquaintance acting aggressively toward her and tried unsuccessfully to stop him. She was never seen again.

The three guys who last saw Lauren alive told conflicting stories to friends. The acquaintance said he suffered amnesia, and the other two refused to tell what happened that night. They immediately left town, hired high profile lawyers and refused to cooperate with the investigation. They wouldn't talk to law enforcement or Lauren's parents. They only said that Lauren had helped her friend home and left his apartment after saying she 'wanted to party' at 4 am, barefoot and alone.

Private investigators and police tell a different story. They report that after leaving the bar, Lauren was totally incapacitated and was helped along by the male acquaintance. When she is last captured on video surveillance, early in the morning of June 3rd, she's in bad shape. She falls on the ground, unable to even put her hands up to break her fall. The last image of Lauren captures her on camera, being dragged and carried down an alley to the apartment of the acquaintance. She is not captured on camera again leaving, and police say there is no evidence she ever made it to the corner.

Police call the three guys "Persons of Interest" in her disappearance, but two years later, Lauren hasn't been found and there have been no arrests. There are rumors about what happened that night, but the boys aren't talking and all three refuse to take polygraphs. They have the right to remain silent. But, they haven't always been silent. They tell the media that the search for Lauren is ruining their lives and reputations. Online, anonymous comments have spammed the articles about Lauren since she disappeared, painting Lauren as a 'party girl' and blaming the victim. On social media sites the three guys frequent, like the Phantasy Tours fan forum, any mention of Lauren is met with an onslaught of vile insults. The victim is called a "coke head", a slut, and worse. (I will not repeat the violent and misogynistic comments about rape, or the vile words they use to dehumanize her)

Lauren was a sweet girl who went to summer camp and volunteered in her spare time. She loved fashion, Hello Kitty, and The Beatles. She had more friends that you could count, and a sister, mother and father who adored her. She had dreams about her life and what she would do when she graduated from IU. On the night she went missing, she did nothing wrong but go to a college bar underage, something students do every weekend in Bloomington and all around the country. The people she thought were friends plied her with drinks, carried her around as if she was a thing for them to play with, and then tossed her out when they were done. They say they let her walk off down a dark street alone, with no phone, shoes or money at 4 am. That is, if they are telling the truth. And if not?

Without answers, we can only hope that one day Lauren will be found and those who are responsible for her disappearance will face consequences. That part is up to our justice system. But is there is no recourse for the other kinds of victimization? The relentless online bullying and slandering of a girl who is missing and presumed dead? The victim isn't here to defend herself. Let's stand up to this and refuse to protect people who hide behind anonymity to insult, degrade and dehumanize a missing girl. Let's stop blaming the victim.

Some people have nothing better to do with their lives than trying to cause problems for everyone else. I think they should be able to trace the computers those comments are coming from and give them a temporary block from the internet

Anyone who would cyber bully a girl in these circumstances knows what they are doing is wrong which is the only reason they do it because they thrive off of attention
