JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Middle school memories are filled with passing notes, chatting in the hall and unfortunately for many, bullies. One local 14-year-old will never forget the bullies at her school.

Aria Jewett was chased down Thursday, by at least three classmates, and beaten so severely that she was taken to the emergency room by ambulance, according to police reports from the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.

"This bullying with children and kids is ridiculous," said Melissa Thomas who wants answers and justice for her daughter who spent one night in the hospital.

"I don't want another parent to go through any of this what I just went through, this is awful. I could have been burying my child," said Thomas outside the Duval County Courthouse.

Jewett suffered a skull fracture so serious it caused tears in the membranes surrounding her brain and leakage of cerebrospinal fluid. Jewett also suffered a "severe concussion, mild abrasions and contusions to the head," the reports detailed.

A video of the incident, according to JSO, shows a suspect beating Jewett's head into a stone wall, running after, kicking and continuously beating Jewett as she laid on the ground covering her head in a fetal position.

Two other juvenile suspects could be seen on video allegedly laughing and cheering during the beating. One was even caught on camera filming the alleged beating via cellphone, according to the JSO reports.
A nearby witness, Francine Schumpert, said in an email, "an Oceanway Middle School girl was chased off campus by approximately six other girls and beaten..."

Schumpert went on to claim Jewett collapsed following the attack in the parking lot of the Oceanway Veterinary Clinic.

"The girls then ran back to school ... I guess thinking they would go on as if nothing happened," added Schumpert.

At least three arrests have been made in the attack, according to police reports. Jewett's mother said more arrests are expected later this week.

It seems the girls are just a mean and violent as the boys these days.

The article does not mention what sparked the incident or if it was something that had been stewing for a while. Either way bullying should never be tolerated.
