Bullying: it doesn’t end after high school. A new book claims that employees openly mocked departed Today show anchor Ann Curry’s wardrobe in the days before she was shoved off the show, a time period she described as “professional torture.”

“A lot of time in the control room was spent making fun of Ann’s outfit choices or just generally messing with her,” a source told reporter Brian Selter in his book Top of the Morning: Inside the Cutthroat World of Morning TV, which was excerpted in the New York Times Magazine. A bright yellow dress Curry wore on air inspired staff in the control room to Photoshop her alongside an image of Big Bird with the caption “Who wore it best?”

The behind-the-scenes bullying is indicative of what Curry felt was a “boys club” atmosphere on the show, Selter reports (Us reported in March that Matt Lauer thwarted a plan to hire three female producers, comparing the team to Sarah McLachlan’s Lilith Fair).

While the official reason for her departure was a lack of “chemistry” with Matt Lauer, Curry felt that statement masked a larger issue. “‘Chemistry,’ in television history, generally means the man does not want to work with the woman,” she told Selter. “It’s an excuse generally used by men in positions of power to say, ‘The woman doesn’t work.’”

Two months before Curry stepped down as co-anchor, Today was trumped in the ratings by ABC’s Good Morning America, marking the first time in over 16 years Today was not number one. It never recovered, even though Curry’s replacement Savannah Guthrie’s fashion is apparently not quite so Muppet-esque — she was deemed worthy of a November Vogue profile afterall. But as Today has continued to sink, it’s clear that the program has problems, and they’re bigger than any anchor’s fashion sense.
