Barrowman was born in Mount Vernon in Glasgow, Scotland, the youngest of three children, but moved to Aurora, Illinois, in the U.S. in 1976 when his father, also John, was put in charge of the Caterpillar tractor manufacturing plant there.
John Barrowman had a tough time growing up in Illinois.

The Torchwood star, who is openly gay, was teased as a child for starring in school plays.

But John, 41, who was also a talented athlete, didn't let the bullies get him down.

‘The jocks would see me with my friends from the musical productions and call us the “choir f*gs”,’ he says.

‘I wouldn’t take shit from anyone. They knew I would get them back in training the next day.’

Now John says it's important that he doesn't come across as a camp stereotype.

'I don't really like the idea that people think of all gay men as the
same,' he tells Seven. 'I hope people look at me and see that not all of us are mincing about!'

"I knew I was gay when I was 13," he tells me. "Actually, I'd probably begun to realise when I was nine.

"I remember looking at a photograph of a man and a woman, and my eyes went instinctively to the man.

"But you don't broadcast that sort of preference in America's Mid-West. In those days - particularly in the Bible belt - you were taught there must be something wrong with you if you were that way inclined.

"I was bullied at school because of my Scottish accent. So I adopted an American accent to be like everyone else, and that's how I speak today - except when I'm with my parents or my brother and sister.

"When we get together we revert to broad Scots dialect without realising it.

"Growing up, I didn't lie about my sexuality, but I did pretend. I had a girlfriend at college - you don't know if you don't like it until you try it.

"In my early 20s I decided it was time to accept me for myself. I thought: 'I'm just going to be who I am.' And that was it."

It's easy to see how he fits into the role of Captain Jack. Russell T. Davies, the writer of Dr Who and Torchwood, was looking for someone who could convey the idea that in the future "they'll sleep with anything".

But when Barrowman is asked if he could relate to that part of the character - could he ever sleep with a woman - there is a sharp intake of breath.

"I can't answer that. I don't have a desire to do so, but that doesn't mean I don't find women sexy."

All the jocks in high school bully the kids in theatre class but wish they were in Hollywood acting with all the stars after they graduate.
