Nikki Blonsky, the star of Hairspray, discussed how she was bullied physically and mentally for her height and size and what it was like playing the role of someone “different” in Hairspray.
Blonsky was born and raised in Great Neck, Long Island, New York and graduated from the Great Neck Village School, a five-time Grammy Foundation Signature School where she was trained in music and theater. Blonsky's performing credits include ‘Teri O Shaughnessy’ in Ugly Betty, ‘Rhonda Baxter’ in Harold, Dolores in ‘Waiting for Forever’, 'Madame Tanardeau' in Les Miserables, 'Mrs. Lovett' in Sweeney Todd, 'Kate' in Kiss Me, Kate, 'Rebecca Hillicker' in The Laramie Project and the title role in Bizet's Carmen. In addition to being an actress, singer and dancer, she is an advocate for the LGBT community as well as the anti-bullying movement. Blonsky, who has fallen victim to bullying throughout her life, recently traveled to Washington DC, with Children Uniting Nations to speak to congress about children’s rights issues, specifically bullying and keeping physical education in schools.
