As a young girl growing up in a suburb of Ottawa, Canada, I didn't look like anyone else. My father is Chinese and my mother is European and I looked like a blend of them both but not either one in particular. When I would get picked up from school by my mom or dad, kids would ask "why don't you look like your mom" or "why don't you look like your dad".

Those are questions that no one should have to answer, especially as a child. I found it really hard to understand and turned to my family for support. Being biracial is a beautiful thing and it's something that I've grown to celebrate more and more as I've matured. Dancing and singing became an outlet for me to express my frustration of the constant ridicule of the kids at school. I'm grateful that I was able to turn to the arts to help me cope with the bullying. Nobody looks exactly like anyone else and being unique is a gift. Bullies are often people who are insecure with their own appearance and circ*mstances. It's important to remember that strength comes from within and it's up to you to find it!
