Season nine 'American Idol' contestant Todrick Hall has created an original song and music video to support LGBT activist Dan Savage's "It Gets Better" campaign to discourage gay and bisexual teenagers from committing suicide as a result of bullying.
Titled 'It Gets Better,' the original tune written by Hall also features clips of video messages from the campaign from rapper Eve, talk show host Wendy Williams and singer Jason Derulo, among others.
"I heard about all of the recent suicides, and I knew that I had to do something," Hall told BlackVoices. "God put this song on my heart, and I put it down on paper."
The 24-year-old vocalist, who currently stars on Broadway in the Tony Award-winning musical 'Memphis,' shared that he, too, has been the victim of bullying.
"I was bullied so much as a child," he confessed, before adding: "And still deal with bullying as an adult! I know how it feels to not know who you can trust or talk to!
Though the music video for the song has only been online for several days, Hall said the feedback he has received already has been overwhelming.
"I've received numerous e-mails from teenagers across the world saying that this song saved their life. Seems a little drastic, but music is very powerful. I hope and pray this is only the beginning of what the 'It Gets Better' campaign will do," he shared.
The single will be available on iTunes today, and Hall hopes that its message will reach the masses.
"Some people think that this a statement from me to the LGBT community, but this song is not just written for gay people; it's simply written for all people," he closed.
Prior to competing on 'American Idol' earlier this year, the Plainview, Texas-bred singer starred on Broadway in 'The Color Purple' alongside Fantasia and in a production of 'Beauty and the Beast' at Walt Disney World.
