Santos Saúl Álvarez Barragán commonly known as El Canelo, from canela, Spanish for cinnamon, in reference to his red hair; is a Mexican professional boxer in the Light Middleweight division. He is the former WBC, WBA, and Ring Magazine Light Middleweight Champion. He is promoted by Oscar De La Hoya's Golden Boy Promotions.
It started with the teasing. For years, Saul "Canelo" Alvarez took it all, meekly, until one day a bigger kid called him out for his obviously unique physical traits among Mexicans -- light skin, freckly face, and that shock of red hair -- and the smaller youngster snapped.Canelo turned from the bullied into the bully and put a halt to the teasing with knuckles on skulls. The youngster became a skilled horseman on the family's farm in Juanacatlan, Jalisco, Mexico, a few miles southeast of Guadalajara.
"My older brother is the one who got me started in boxing," Canelo said. "He's the one who inspired me."
Alvarez found his way to Guadalajara's famed Julian Magdaleno Gym, where the father-and-son training team of Chepo and Eddy Reynoso quickly took notice and nicknamed him "Canelo," Spanish for "Cinnamon," yet another direct reference to Alvarez's physical features, but one he embraced because of the good-natured intent.
Outside the gym, the teasing continued, and the youngster quickly used his burgeoning boxing skills to gain control of those situations. He liked watching would-be bullies bleed and concede.
"When I was a little kid, I was always fighting, beating kids up," he said.
As a teen, Canelo learned to restrict his fighting to the ring. By age 15, he was a national junior champion and the Reynosos convinced Santos Alvarez to let his youngest son turn pro because they couldn't find amateur opponents anymore.
