Christopher James "Chris" Christie is the 55th Governor of New Jersey, and a leading member of the Republican Party in the United States.
A Newark native, Christie became interested in politics at an early age, and volunteered for the gubernatorial campaign of Republican Tom Kean in 1977. Graduating from the University of Delaware, he then earned a J.D. degree at Seton Hall Law School.
Christie joined a Cranford, New Jersey law firm in 1987, where he became a partner in 1993, and continued practicing until 2002. Meanwhile, he was elected as a county legislator (called a "Freeholder") in Morris County, serving from 1995 to 1998 during which time he generally pushed for lower taxes and lower spending. By 2002, Christie had done campaign work for both presidents George H.W. Bush and George W. Bush; the latter appointed him United States Attorney for the District of New Jersey where he served from 2002 to 2008. In that position, he emphasized prosecutions of political corruption, and also obtained convictions for sexual slavery, arms trafficking, racketeering by gangs, and other federal crimes.
In January 2009, Christie declared his candidacy for Governor of New Jersey. He won the Republican primary, and then defeated incumbent Governor Jon Corzine in the general election. Christie, who was seen as a possible candidate in the 2012 presidential election, declined to run, but he delivered the keynote address at the 2012 Republican National Convention. Chris Christie is widely viewed as a possible presidential candidate in 2016. In 2013 Christie won a landslide re-election, beating Democratic rival Barbara Buono.
Chris Christie isn’t letting a little playground bullying get to him, according to Yahoo. The politician has long been teased for his heft, and in fact, says it is fair game. However, some say that the Time cover from last week captioned as “The Elephant in the Room” has gone too far, and the cover is immature and uncalled for.
But Christie himself, who had lap band surgery in February to lose weight, says he is not in the least bothered by the insinuation. “If I’m bothered by jokes about my weight, it’s time for me to crawl up into a fetal position and go home. The fact is, that, you know, if they think it’s clever, great for them.”
The magazine was packed with Christie fare, with three articles including a story by MSNBC host Joe Scarborough who had the most interesting comparison to make of Christie.”For a pro-life conservative running in a deep blue state, it was a performance every bit as dominant as the Boss ripping through a live version of ‘Rosalita,’” Scarborough wrote. “And like Springsteen himself, Christie made it all look easy.”
The Time issue, which says that Tuesday’s landslide election “instantly christened him the GOP frontrunner for 2016?, was a positive thing for Chris Christie. He is more proud of the exposure and acknowledgement of doing something right and is not offended.
“The way the people of New Jersey look at this, their governor has been on the cover of Time magazine twice in one year,” Christie said. “We must be doing something right. And the fact is that they reaffirmed what we did, and what our strategy was for the last four years. Go everywhere, show up, govern and make decisions. Not just go to the places where they vote for you, but go to the places where they haven’t voted for you. … That’s the way you grow and expand the political movement. That’s how you get the kind of numbers we got on Tuesday night. People in New Jersey are proud of me. Whatever they put on the cover of Time magazine, as long as my name is with it, I could care less.”
