Karen Shenaz David is a Canadian-British actress, singer and songwriter, who is best known for portraying Francesca "Cesca" Montoya in the BBC television series, Waterloo Road, and Layla in the American action film, The Scorpion King 2: Rise of a Warrior.David also starred in Pixelface, a CBBC children's television series, where she plays Alexia, the glamorous legend hunter. She made one appearance as Kayla Graham in the Fox television series Touch, with Kiefer Sutherland and Danny Glover. The episodes aired on February 18 and 25, in the USA.
Her career began at the age of six, when she saw an advert offering auditions for a TV commercial. ‘I called the number and the lady said, “Do your parents know you’re calling?” I said, “No, I’m not allowed to speak to strangers, this is between you and me.” She was so tickled she said she’d call back and speak to my parents. At first they were angry, but they managed to get time off work to take me, and that started my acting career.’
It’s hard to believe the strikingly beautiful woman before me was bullied at school. ‘I had really bad acne and hid behind geeky pink glasses. Going on stage was an escape. When I said I wanted to be an actress and singer, the other kids would all look at me like, are you serious?
'I wanted to prove myself. I never spoke up about what was happening to me, but when I was about 16 I decided I’d try every medication until I got rid of my acne. My mum finally found a clinic and my doctor took me by the hand and said, “Karen, we’ll get rid of it”, and we did. I wrote a song called Pink Glasses, which was about me hiding behind them. It brings tears to my eyes when I look at a picture of myself in them.’
