Lin Yu Chun is a Taiwanese singer, who gained fame by appearing on a Taiwanese talent show, One Million Star, singing "I Will Always Love You" (written and originally sung by Dolly Parton) in the style of Whitney Houston's cover version. Lin is well known for his mezzo-soprano-like, and sometimes, contralto-like countertenor singing voice, although he has an adult speaking voice. According to many sources, Lin's voice is usually described as a mixture of Whitney Houston and Susan Boyle, with a dash of Cher. When Lin sings in his normal masculine voice rather than in a falsetto range, his voice actually somewhat sounds like Jamie Walters.
Lin Yu Chun is already a YouTube star, with millions having watched his amazing rendition of the classic love song. What comes next remains to be seen, but what’s clear already is that the man the British papers are dubbing ‘the next Susan Boyle’ has already made his mark. Not to mention that he’s already cashed it in: Lin Yu Chun was crowned the winner of the Taiwanese casting show and won $1 million.
But an unpleasant past is what led Lin Yu Chun to this glorifying moment: he was bullied and teased as a child for being overweight; something that caused him to seek solace in singing in his room.
CSMonitor.com quotes Lin Yu Chun as saying: “Being fat draws a lot of mockery in our society.” The singer went on to explain that he lacked self-confidence because of what he had to endure.
“I now have more confidence in pursuing a singing career,” he said in an interview with AP. “You don’t have to be a good-looking man or woman to succeed. Just be yourself and try your best.”
