ESPN sat down with Baylor’s Brittney Griner to talk about bullying and the possibility of her playing in the NBA.
Here are two small quotes from a short video.
‘I was picked on and I wasn’t the ‘cool kid.’ I wasn’t always liked. [I’ve got] big feet, a shoe size of 17, massive hands and I don’t have this soft voice. I like my voice I don’t care. I like being different. I always got picked on. ‘She’s a man,’ I’ll say it. But I’m here now doing this and I can reach back and talk to the younger generation and tell them to stop it [bullying]. It’s not right and it doesn’t help us out at all.’
On playing defense against NBA players:
‘LeBron James, especially when he comes down the lane, or Dwight Howard…I’m not going to move or try to take a charge and get dunked on. If I get dunked on, I’m jumping and I’m going to try and block it. I’m going down with a fight. I’m not just going to sit there and get posterized. I’m going to be up there and try to swat it. It really could happen [her playing in the NBA]. I’m just waiting on that call. Let me know when tryouts are and I’ll be there.’
Here’s one more quote from a second clip:
On hearing Mark Cuban’s comments about giving her a tryout:
‘First, when I saw it, I was like, ‘Yeah, let’s go! I’m there!’ But first thing’s first – WBNA. I just want to make that clear, that’s priority, that’s first. If I get a chance to go and try out with the big boys, hey, I’m going to do it. I’ve never shied away from a challenge. I’ve always been the girl to push the envelope. I remember my mom dressing me up in a dress and I’m going outside climbing trees… But if somebody doesn’t push it, who will? We’ll be stuck, just right here in the same spot. That’s what I want to do. I want to push the envelope and open up doors for the younger girls to be able to have the same opportunities and be able to do things and not get criticized for doing it and for not being ‘the girl.’ I don’t understand what ‘the girl’ is.’
