Sean Kanan is an American actor, best known for his portrayals of A. J. Quartermaine on General Hospital, Deacon Sharpe on The Bold and the Beautiful and The Young and the Restless, and Mike Barnes in The Karate Kid, Part III.
“I’ve been very involved with the Anti-Defamation League which is the premiere civil rights organization in the United States. It was founded in 1913. It’s very concerned with anti-Semitism issues, racial intolerance, bigotry and things like that. One of their other causes is bullying and cyber-bullying. I’ve become very involved with that because as a young kid growing up in western Pennsylvania, I was very frequently on the receiving end of a lot of bullying.Kanan was overweight as a young boy and was bullied brutally for it. And then I later grew up to become an actor in the role of Mike Barnes in Karate Kid III who was sort of an iconic bully.
One of the great things about being on Y&R is that it gives me a forum to bring attention to some of the causes I’m passionate about. I’m urging parents to listen to their kids when they say they’re being bullied and to take it seriously. The Anti-Defamation League has been instrumental in creating curriculum and programs for both parents and educators alike. I was recently in Washington, D.C. lobbying and trying to make a difference.”

In a way that has got to be torture to play a bully in a movie when you were bullied badly at school. He made the bullying in Karate Kid seem second nature and to that I say well done.

I have a feeling because so many celebrities are behind this cause that something big is going to happen for bullying soon.
