THE WORLD rankings might say otherwise but Myles Pearson believes the home crowd factor means he and the wheelchair rugby team are London 2012 Paralympic favourites.
At 19 Pearson – who used to play wheelchair tennis before switching sports – is the baby of the GB squad bound for the capital and he is adamant he can be part of a golden celebration.
The latest wheelchair rugby world rankings place the GB squad in fifth but it’s gold that is pre-occupying Pearson’s thoughts.
Pearson said: “With the home support we should get that extra edge, I’d say we have to be favourites. None of the other teams see us like that, but they won’t be expecting what London is going to give us.
“We’re definitely looking for a medal, we’d love it to be gold but we’ll see what happens. We’ve run the USA and Australia close recently, they are the two best in the world, so we know we can be*t the best.
“I can’t quite believe this has all happened so fast.
“Four years ago when Beijing was on I wasn’t even playing rugby, I started a year later.”
That new beginning brought about a life-changing sporting love for the brutal game which is nicknamed M*rderball.
Bullied at school, Pearson needed an outlet and after an amazing three-year journey to the Games he admits he can’t wait for the show to begin tomorrow.
“I was only 15 when I found out about wheelchair rugby, I found out there was a club in Southport which I wanted to join,” he said.
“I was going through a tough patch at school because I was getting bullied, and at that age what you need is a good fight sometimes.
“Wheelchair rugby is for complete nutters, it’s crazy but I absolutely love it.
“Times were tough for me, but I’ve built up my confidence and my independence.”
