Playing a former high school ‘It’ girl in the upcoming dark comedy Young Adult may have been a stretch for Charlize Theron, who says she was decidedly unpopular as a teenager. Theron was raised in Johannesburg, South Africa — but her classroom tormentors were just as ruthless as American teens.
“I wore really nerdy glasses because I was blind as could be, and the boys didn’t like me,” the actress told People magazine.
Though boys were her cruelest peers, Theron wasn’t spared the all-too-common torment of pre-teen girls: The in-crowd made fun of her hair, clothing, and occasional “crazy” behavior.
“I actually got a lot of the mean girl stuff from the ages of seven to 12. I was pretty much a mess in primary school,” she said.
The star developed a thick skin and a strong ambition: By 16, she had won a year-long modeling contract in Milan. Two successful decades and an Oscar later, Theron seems to have quieted the bullies once and for all.

I knew she had to have some serious culture because this woman is just beautiful. Hard to believe she was ever picked on in school so I would like to see those kid pics in Mom's photo album. I never knew about what her father was like as she was younger but now that I know I admire her much more for her accomplishments.
